 Going to Denia

Denia

DENIA is located in the northern part of Alicante in Spain. It has a total of 20 kilometers of coastline. It has a population of only about 34,000 people. This will double during summer when British expatriates flock here for their annual vacation of about two months. Surely, the British must be a bunch to be thanked for. They have swelled the pockets of the Denia economy. The climate here is usually sunny with throughout the year with an average temperature of 19 degrees Celsius. There are approximately 300 sunshine days all year round. It is recognized by the World Health Organization as one of the world’s healthiest places. A rocky fort can be seen overlooking the marina below. There are also Iberian ruins in the hillsides nearby. In the days of Al Andalus, Denia served as the capital of a taifa kingdom which extends all the way to Ibiza. This is when the fortress was built. It was used and restored by the French during their turn to conquer Denia.

There is a daily ferry going back and forth to Ibiza and Formentera from Denia. You can also get there by train and by bus from Alicante, Madrid and Valencia. Since Denia is part of continental Europe, you can go there with your own car provided you have the right papers. The traveling time from Amsterdam to Denia takes 22 hours. If you’re coming in from the air, the two airports are located in Valencia and Alicante. Jet cruises are also available from Madrid or Barcelona. There are three Spanish carriers and one German carrier servicing these air routes. From Alicante or Valencia, you will still have 100 kilometers to go.
Its main festival is the Holy Week festival where gigantic papier maches are erected and set on fire. In July, another popular festival, the Bulls at the Sea, is celebrated.

In this scheme, bulls are set free on a narrow street leading to the Mediterranean Sea. Beaches here are divided into two – the sandy beach and the rocky beach. In one of those beaches, there is a yacht club. It has 601 slips, diesel, boat maintenance, cranes, and cleaning and antifouling facilities. Aside from the swimming, leisure activities usually concentrated in the sandy beach are windsurfing and sunbathing. In the rocky beach you will find numerous diving resorts. These diving resorts employ with them certified diving instructors and crash courses in diving are offered from beginners to advanced. When you dive or snorkel, you will find lots of fauna below – fishes, squids, octopuses, sea urchins, etc. You can also play golf in Denia if you want. Then there’s the Montgo Natural Park. It is a hiker’s lover and Montgo Natural Park features lemon and orange groves. From the peak, one can clearly see Ibiza in the distance.

Some of the most popular dishes served in Denia restaurants are fried squid called calamari, rib steak, potatoes and eggs and a local wine to pamper your digestion process. Remember, there are lots of good wine available in Spain.
